Exploring Plymouth’s New Crematorium: The Park
On Friday 2nd August, I had the privilege of visiting Plymouth’s brand-new crematorium, aptly named "The Park." Set to open its doors on August 12th, this state-of-the-art facility promises to be a serene and comforting place for families to say their final goodbyes. From the moment I stepped onto the grounds, I was impressed by the thought and care that has gone into creating such a peaceful and respectful environment.
My visit began with a warm welcome from Graham Smith, Head of Bereavement Services for Plymouth City Council. Graham gave a brief but insightful introduction to the site, highlighting its significance for the community. He then passed the baton to James, a young Cremation Technician with years of experience working for Plymouth City Council. James led the tour with a blend of professionalism and genuine care, reflecting the ethos that underpins The Park.
A Tour of The Park
The Park is not just a crematorium; it’s a multifaceted space designed with the needs of grieving families in mind. One of the most striking features of the site is its three distinct ceremony rooms, each tailored to accommodate different types of services.
Ceremony Room 1 is the largest, offering seating for 120 people, with extra seating available and plenty of standing room for additional attendees. If the room reaches capacity, there are screens outside so that everyone can be part of the service, even if they can’t be in the main room.
Ceremony Room 2 is slightly smaller, with seating for 80, but it’s similarly equipped with additional seating, standing room, and overflow options to ensure no one misses out.
Ceremony Room 3 provides a more intimate setting, ideal for smaller gatherings or direct cremations, with space for up to 12 people.
One of the standout features of Ceremony Rooms 1 and 2 is the modular furniture, and moveable catafalque and seating. This flexibility means the space can be easily adjusted to accommodate all guests, including those with accessibility needs. Adding to this, the first two rows of seating are not standard chairs but incredibly comfortable sofas, a thoughtful touch that allows bereaved family members to sit together in a supportive and cosy environment.
What truly sets The Park apart is its use of modern technology. Both Ceremony Rooms 1 and 2 are equipped with customisable lighting, allowing families to create an atmosphere that reflects their loved one’s personality. The state-of-the-art colour wash facility is a first in the country, enabling families to light a wall in the deceased’s favourite colour. Whether it's Plymouth Argyle Green or another meaningful hue, this feature adds a deeply personal touch to the service.
The ceremony rooms are supported by a new reception and administration area where families can meet with staff in a comfortable and welcoming setting. This thoughtful design ensures that every aspect of the experience at The Park is handled with care and compassion.
An interesting feature that I hadn’t seen before is the cremator viewing room. This space is available for those whose religious beliefs or personal wishes include witnessing the cremation process. While it’s not something I would personally recommend for everyone, the fact that it’s available is a testament to The Park’s commitment to catering to the diverse needs of the community.
The site also includes a memorial garden and a Sanctum Vault for the scattering of ashes, providing additional options for families to honour their loved ones.
Facilities Designed with Care
The Park offers more than just ceremonial spaces. The site includes a public café and two function rooms, complete with a bar, available for hire for wakes, memorialisation events, or other family gatherings. These spaces can be adapted to suit various needs, accommodating up to 75 guests when the rooms are combined. The on-site café provides a space for quiet reflection or a more informal gathering after a service, surrounded by the tranquillity of the crematorium’s beautifully landscaped grounds.
These buildings are set amidst wildflower meadows, an arboretum area, a memorial wall, and a Book of Remembrance room, offering multiple options for families to remember and honour their loved ones. There’s even a defined children’s memorial area, ensuring that every family, no matter their circumstances, has a place of solace and remembrance.
A Final Thought
The Park will replace the ageing crematoria at Efford and Weston Mill, which have served Plymouth for over 20 years. While these older sites will remain open for burials and other interments, The Park represents a significant step forward in providing a modern, compassionate, and flexible space for end-of-life ceremonies.
In all, The Park is more than just a crematorium; it’s a place designed to support families through some of their most difficult moments. The combination of modern facilities, a peaceful setting, and a compassionate team makes it a truly special addition to Plymouth.
